About Spun Gold

Music for Special Occasions, Functions and Events

SPUN GOLD provides music for SPECIAL OCCASIONS, FUNCTIONS and EVENTS – catering especially for those who enjoy ‘Solid Gold Music’ as played on our local radio station over weekends and public holidays.

Amazing Solid Gold Music Library

We have a unique music library of over 10 000 original hit recordings spanning 6 decades, with particular emphasis on music from the 1960’s & 70’s. We cover a wide range of genres, from rock bands and vocalists, through country, folk, strict tempo, light orchestral, big bands, jazz groups, and light classics. With this amazing library and Terry’s extensive knowledge and experience, SPUN GOLD will match the mood and style of your occasion.

The quality and authenticity of our music is core to our philosophy. We only play original hit versions, often from original vinyl LP’s and singles from the era. Because memories and reminiscence are part of what we do, it’s important that people can listen to our music at a level appropriate for the occasion. We are equally at home at a cocktail party, dinner party or dance party and our music is designed to complement rather than dominate an occasion. The emphasis is on the music, not the effects (although we can provide lighting if required).

Mobile Entertainment for your function

SPUN GOLD is mobile and everything is portable, so we come to you and can play our music at just about any location (provided there is electricity and protection from the elements). The equipment is compact enough to fit most home environments if you are having a party at home. Our regular equipment will suit a crowd of between 30 and 150 people, but we can cater for larger crowds if required.

Spun Gold History

Spun Gold’s roots go back to the mid 1960’s when Terry was a high school student and learned to play records at parties for family and friends. He was fortunate in that the family had accumulated a remarkable record collection and he soon became quite sought after as the ‘music man’ at student parties. The sixties was the era when “Coffee Bar” discos blossomed in places like Hillbrow and at progressive churches with active youth groups, like The Lemon Squeezer in Victory Park.

When Terry became a university student he realised that he could turn his hobby and extensive knowledge of pop music into a lucrative source of pocket money by providing a professional service for more formal occasions like 21st birthday parties. And so “Spinning Wheels Travelling Discotheque” was born in 1969. He soon tired of carting a hi-fi system around in cardboard boxes which had to be unpacked, connected together, and then packed up again at the end of each party.

As there was no mobile disco equipment commercially available in Johannesburg at that time he designed and built his own portable system which was easy to carry around and required a minimum of connecting. The rest, as they say, is history. Spinning Wheels graduated from 21st birthday parties to club parties, weddings, office parties, silver weddings and even 40th wedding anniversaries.

By the early 1970’s ‘Spinning Wheels’ was so successful that Terry could not keep up with demand, and a second set was built and operated in partnership with two of his closest friends, Keith & Fraser. At their peak they were doing over 100 gigs a year in an area that stretched from Rustenburg to Springs, from Vereeniging to Pretoria.

At the heart of Spinning Wheels was a superb music collection and DJ’s who really knew their music and understood how to play to a wide age group. Their repertoire always included a sprinkling of strict tempo ballroom dancing mixed in with the most popular rock music, ‘golden oldies’ from the 50’s and evergreens like ‘Simon Says’, ‘Zorba’s Dance’, The Locomotion’ and of course a Scottish reel for good measure. Sadly, by the early 1980’s the demands of careers and parenting made it impossible to continue the late hours and back to back weekends, and so Spinning Wheels closed in 1983.

Solid Gold like you’ve never heard it before

But the music did not die! The original vinyl records were all safely stored away until Terry retired from the corporate world in 2007, by which time he had also accumulated a significant collection of original hits on CD to add to his already legendary music library. He has re-launched the disco using new technology and a new name, “SPUN GOLD”. The old magical sounds have been brought back to life in digital format, and can be enjoyed once again in perfect clarity, just as they sounded 40 years ago. And, thanks to new technology, you now have access to the complete library for that special occasion instead of just the few hundred selected items we had to limit ourselves to through spatial constraints in the old days.
